Sino-Soviet pipeline talks stall

Despite sending a high level delegation to plead its case, the proposal for a 2,400 km pipeline from Siberia to China is reported to have stalled.

China is insisting that Russia stays with the earlier agreement that would have created a direct pipeline between the two countries. However, Russia wants a revised agreement, which would see a spur of the pipeline heading into China from the Pacific port of Narkhodka.

The Chinese delegation is threatening a cooling of relations between the two countries unless its terms are met.
