"The first shipment and its arrival in PNG is the culmination of several years of continued effort to realise PNG's first refinery and a clear demonstration of InterOil's commitment and dedication to this enterprise and to Papua New Guinea," said InterOil's general manager of projects, Alexander Nairn.
The refining equipment has been refurbished from a decommissioned North American refinery.
InterOil said the project, which is expected to be completed by next year's fourth quarter, should attract a stream of new projects. The company added that combined with a proposed tax reform in the oil and gas exploration area, PNG could once again become a regional leader.
