Siemens heads offshore

GERMAN giant Siemens, one of the worlds largest engineering and technology corporations, has anno...

The Lillgrund project will use 48 of Siemens’ 2.3 megawatt MkII turbines for an installed capacity of 110MW – which Siemens PG said would be able to meet the energy demands of approximately 60,000 Swedish households.

The wind farm is expected to start delivering power in late 2007.

The Lillgrund project follows Siemens PG’s recent announcement of the Burbo Bank offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay in the United Kingdom, which will consist of 25 3.6MW turbines, also due to come online next year.

Siemens claims to be a world leader in the construction of offshore wind energy projects, dating back to its first project, the Vindeby wind park in Denmark, back in 1991. Siemens PG also constructed the world’s largest offshore wind project, the 166MW Nysted project, also in Denmark.
