The decision is expected to result in a $US100-120 million ($A128-153 million) impairment to the June quarter results.

The Swiss-based company has won $26 million in contracts since March 18 according to its latest fleet update.

This included contract extension wins in offshore Nigeria and the UK North Sea.

The GSF Explorer first entered service back in 1973.
