Each project was subject to the normal environmental and Aboriginal heritage approvals process to ensure they "do the right thing," said the Minister for State Development, Mr Clive Brown. About two-thirds of the Burrup Peninsula has been set aside for conversation and recreation, with the remainder of the area set aside for industry, the Minister added.
The Burrup Peninsula is already home to the largest resource project in Australian corporate history, namely the North-West gas project, with an additional $6 billion worth of projects slated for the area. It has been described by some commentators as the most valuable strip of industrial land in Australia.
